Join us on Thursday, January 27th 2022, from 7:00-8:00 pm to hear from our guest speaker, Douglas Brooks present on: 

“WAYS OF LEARNING; AN APPRENTICE BOATBUILDER IN JAPAN.”

Douglas Brooks, boatbuilder, writer and researcher, will share his experiences building and researching fresh water boats in Japan. After thirty years of research on traditional Japanese boatbuilding, including apprenticeships with nine craftspeople, in the last few years he has focused on Japan’s inland river boats, designed and built in ways unique from sea boats. He will also discuss the pedagogy of Japanese crafts: the rigorous apprentice system.

Douglas Brooks has published five books on Japanese boatbuilding. His work has been honored by the Japanese Ministry of Culture and the American Craft Council. He lives with his wife Catherine in Vergennes, Vermont.
