This five-day class will introduce students to working in a woodshop while they create their own Shaker style end table – complete with a drawer – to take home with them. We will learn power tool safety principles as we learn how to use machines such as the table saw, jointer, and planer, and we will also learn how to use hand tools such as hand saws, chisels, planes, and measuring and marking tools. We’ll discuss topics such as wood qualities and joinery techniques as each student becomes more proficient through hands-on tool experience. Though oriented toward new woodworkers, this class also welcomes those wishing to deepen their skills.
About Lizabeth Moniz (she/her):
Having always been a curious and experiential learner, Lizabeth has explored many things in her life. Two of her constants though, have been wood and plants. A carpenter by trade, she has built many projects from tables to houses. She has also taught different populations and ages to become skillful in woodworking, furniture building, and carpentry, through Green Mountain College, Women Build, the Peace Corps, and Yestermorrow Design/Build School. For Lizabeth, a great day would include walking in the forest amongst the trees, hand planing with a perfectly sharp plane, or body-surfing in shark-free waters. She lives with her husband Skip in central Vermont in a house they built themselves.
