This class will introduce new and returning woodworkers to basic hand tools and some machinery. Each student will build two Shaker oval boxes and one three-tread stepstool to take home. We will demonstrate different forms of joinery, including dove tail and swallow tail oval box joints. We’ll also explore both wood technology and Shaker craft history. The aim of the class is to gain a deeper understanding of woodworking, Shaker tradition, and one another.
About Bobby Ives (he/him) and Mike Stevens (he/him)
Bobby is a boatbuilder, minister, and co-founder of the Carpenter’s Boat Shop. Currently, his roles include grandpa, sailer, volunteer, and beloved community member, among many others. This class combines several of his favorite passions: working with wood, history, and storytelling.
Mike Stevens, a retired minister, loves to build and repair furniture in his home workshop. A former boatbuilding apprentice and long-time board member, Mike is currently an active volunteer at the Carpenter’s Boat Shop.
