Building a Japanese River Boat with Douglas Brooks July 18th-22nd 2022

This class will introduce students to boatbuilding design, tools, and techniques completely different from those used in the West. As a group we will build a traditional 21-foot Japanese river boat called a honryousen, (literally, “typical fishing boat”) from the Shinano River. No woodworking experience is necessary and all the required Japanese boatbuilding tools will be provided. Students will be introduced to the Japanese way of design, sharpening, and tool use.
