A Boat is Born!

After taking their first two weeks here to build their tool boxes and Shaker step stools, our apprentices have moved on to building their first boat!  The crew of 10 has been divided into two groups of five with each group building a Monhegan Skiff.

The hull of a boat is typically built upside down around a jig – a wooden frame that gives the boat it’s shape (akin to a dress mold).  When the hull is finished and the boat is taken off of the jig, we announce that “it is time to birth the boat!”  It’s always an exciting and satisfying moment when the hull is turned right-side up, and the boat is fully revealed.

Enjoy watching this 11′ Monhegan Skiff be born….
